Sherry Gwyn Hubbell Hitt

(September 18, 1957- January 7, 2026)

Sherry was born in Columbia, Tennessee to the late James and Doris Hubbell. Sherry was the youngest of 3 sisters. She attended Highland Elementary, Whitthorne Middle, and Central High School. She loved twirling in the marching band and was a part of the Majorettes in high school, even serving as captain of the Majorettes.

Sherry worked at Genesco for a number of years. In 1982, she met the love of her life, and future husband, Grant Hitt by frequently tossing things off her balcony to land onto his balcony to give her excuses to talk to him. For their first date, Sherry invited Grant over on November 10, 1982 to her apartment to have beef stew and cornbread, which remained a longstanding traditional meal with them and also with their adult children every November 10th until her passing. Sherry and Grant were married on April 7, 1984 by preacher Tom Holland at Crieve Hall Church of Christ, where they continued to attend for the next 40+ years together. They bought their first house in LaVergne, and then moved to their house in Brentwood a few years later, where they lived for the next 33 years. In their earlier years together, they enjoyed taking Grant’s boat to their favorite cove around sunset where they would eat cheese and crackers and play backgammon. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed countless concerts and Tennessee Vols football games. Once they retired, they were excited to cancel their trash service so that they could load up their trash every week, swing through Starbucks, and then listen to Donny Osmond’s Christmas album on their way to the dump. Their life together was full of peace and playfulness. Sherry and Grant had an on-going debate for many decades of who loved who first since they were neighbors before they began dating, and it took both of them a while to share their true feelings prior to dating. They were each other’s best friend and each other’s biggest cheerleaders in life.

Sherry and Grant started a family in 1986 with the arrival of their first born Brandon, and then two years later with the arrival of their daughter Caycee. Sherry was a devoted stay at home mother for several years of her kids’ lives. She got her teaching degree from Lipscomb University and went back to work in 1995 at Lipscomb Elementary. She would teach at Lipscomb for the next 20 years impacting thousands of students along the way, many that she remained in touch with on into their adulthoods until her passing. She loved her 5th Grade Team aka “the Dream Team”, and loved serving Lipscomb elementary in any capacity. She served on the Williamson County Textbook Committee for many years meticulously (and enthusiastically) reading, reviewing, and selecting textbooks for the 5th grade students of Williamson County Schools. She also taught bible classes at her church for many years, and was even awarded a “Teacher of the Year” award.

Sherry retired in 2015 to focus on her health and pursue new adventures. Her first grandchild (Bryson) was born in September of 2015. She continued her teaching ways at “Camp Che” as she helped out with babysitting Bryson, and preparing him for preschool through the years.

Sherry and Grant both have been so supportive of their children over the years. Sherry constantly bragged on her kids’ successes. Never missing any of her kids’ sporting games or practices, she was always in attendance for cheerleading, baseball, softball, football, piano recitals, and basketball as her kids were growing up, and then as her kids became young professionals, she attended interior design events for Caycee, and constantly came to watch Brandon coach. She never missed an opportunity to support and celebrate her kids.

Sherry loved being a mother and a wife, and additionally, she was passionate about sewing and embroidery. She also loved relaxing on her back deck with her dogs, the color blue, playing Rook with her family, and snowmen.

Sherry was very playful with quick wit and a great sense of humor. She had a running joke about being a Rockette for so long, with so many people in on it, that there were many strangers that believed that she had actually been a Rockette. Sherry loved all things Christmas, and she bought a life-size sleigh, and she would text her adult children, nieces, and nephews that she was about to “fly over”, to which everyone would reply with comments of them seeing her in the sky and waving. Everyone around her got to have an inner child at any time, served up with very dry wit.

Sherry was also an intense dog lover. The long-standing joke amongst family and friends was that if we were ever given the opportunity to be reincarnated, that we would want to come back as one of Sherry’s dogs. Her lap was rarely empty any time she sat down near a dog, whether she knew the dog or not.

Sherry is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 41 years, Grant. Son, Brandon (Rebecca), Daughter, Caycee (Paul), her beloved grandson, Bryson, 8 nieces and nephews that she considered her honorary additional children, and 9 great-nieces & great-nephews that she frequently spoiled.

Sherry is preceded in death by her parents James and Doris, and Sister Judy. The Hitt family would like to express their gratitude to Sarah Cannon Research Institute and Adorations Hospice.
