Joyce Lorraine (Anderson) McCall, most recently of Madison, AL, passed away peacefully on 4/22/26 with her son and her step-daughter at her side following a short illness. She was 83.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00am with Cynthia McGowan officiating. Entombment will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 10:00am until the service hour at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bobby McCall, her son, Randy Raybon, step-daughter Melinda Roth, sister-in law Sue Anderson, step-grandchildren Connor and Corbin Roth, step-great granddaughter Jane Roth, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joyce is preceded in death by parents Raymond and Eunice Anderson, brothers James, Clyde, and Herman Anderson, twin-sister Loyce Sexton, first husband Larry Raybon, and step-son Randy McCall.
Joyce was born in Clarke County, Alabama. Out of her high school graduating class of 33, she was one of only three that ever lived outside of Alabama. The favorite daughter of Raymond, who travelled very little and only saw the Gulf in his late sixties, she compensated by becoming a world traveler. Over the years she resided in Coffeeville, AL, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Tallahassee, Oak Ridge, Nashville, Atlanta, and Heflin, AL, before finally settling in Columbia, TN for 23 years before moving to an assisted living facility in Madison, AL, in 2025. She excelled at packing, planning, budgeting, and making every resource last.
She was a stay at home mom for a dozen years. She taught her son to read and to keep on reading, to wonder and to wander. She stressed the value of a formal education, but to always be curious and to be a life-long learner. She modeled devotion to family, faith and faithfulness, as well as how to both give and receive care. She loved having vegetable gardens, but could not sway her son to that. Of course, she passed on her love for travel to him, noting the importance of well-detailed plans, but also how to adapt and appreciate life when plans are derailed.
She retired at 52 years of age after 22 years working at AT&T, lastly as an accounting manager. She spent the next 35 years traveling, much of it in various RVs. She and her loving husband Bobby visited all 50 states, all our national parks, 5 of the 7 continents and travelled every noted scenic route in North America. She took her last trip in the summer of 2020. With her 78th birthday approaching and her dementia becoming noticeable and with Covid raging, she insisted on going “out west” for their 33rd anniversary. Her devoted and indulgent husband hitched up the travel trailer to their F-150 and they ended up in Utah, returning safely three weeks later.
She leaves a legacy of actively loving family, church, and community.
She was deceptively smart, incredibly resilient, soft-spoken but quite willful, was an avid photographer of her travels, and could be fierce when truth, integrity or family were challenged.
She is finally at home, at rest, and at peace.
The family requests in lieu of flowers to make donations to Craft Memorial United Methodist Church, the Alzheimer's Association, or simply save those dollars and travel to a new place and make a fond memory in her honor.
