James Michael Gregory of Spring Hill, TN passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2026. Jim was 85 years old. He will be laid to rest in the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Ln, Nashville, TN 37221, on August 11, 2026 at 1:00pm. Born in Lakeland Florida, Jim retired as a Senior Chief in the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War and receiving the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After 26 years in the Navy, Jim entered the Navy Fleet Reserves for an additional 3 years. After his military service, Jim attained his Bachelor’s Degree and went on to have a successful second career as an IT specialist in California.
Jim chose the Navy because he loved the water and sailing. He even lived for a time on his sailboat. He carried the lessons he learned in the military with him throughout his life. His dedication to physical fitness led him to run marathons and climb mountains. He had a particular and enduring love of firearms, sharing that knowledge to teach family members who shared his interest. Jim and his wife Sally spent much of their retirement riding motorcycles.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sally Chason, his children Debbie (Ken) Shelton and Tammy Strickland Fowler, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Jim created a large blended family that also included many step-children and step grandchildren as well. Jim was preceded in death by his mother Marie (Ned) Massey, father Vonzo (Wylene) Sweat, sister Joy (Jerry) Woodham, and brother Ned Massey Jr.
