Robert Smartt, Sr

Mr. Robert Dewey Smartt, Sr., age 77, of Hickman Lane in Columbia passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Smartt will be conducted Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 2:30 PM from the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, officiated by Bro. Steven Leathers. The family will receive friends in the Hunter Room of Heritage Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, and again on Sunday from 1:30 until the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the Santa Fe Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and is assisting the family.

A native of Grundy County, TN, Dewey was the son of the late Garnett Melvin and Mattie Bell Dyer Smartt, and raised in Coffee County. He relocated to the Maury County area in 1983 where he has been a farmer and member of the Lighthouse Independent Baptist Church of Lewisburg. In his earlier years, he served his country in the United States Army.

Though family, especially grandchildren, was his passion in life, Mr. Smartt was a man of great faith. His dear wife, Jean, came to know the Lord through his example of faith. He continued his love for what the Father created in his farming and gardening, giving away most of what he harvested to others.

In addition to his wife, Jean Patton Smartt, he is survived by two sons: Pastor Robert Dewey “Bobby” (Mary Beth) Smartt, Jr, of Santa Fe and Pastor Timothy James (Beverly) Smartt of Ripley; a daughter: Vicky Diane Smartt (Corey) Bennett of Santa Fe; brothers: Carl David (Fay) Smartt of Tullahoma, and Garnett Wayne (Helen) Smartt of Bradyville; and grandchildren: Alicia “Ali” Nicole Smartt, Matti Elizabeth Smartt, Jonathan Wesley Smartt, Bethany Paige Smartt, Joshua Robert Smartt, Andrew Michael Bennett, and Robert Preston Bennett; a sister-in-law: Lillian Smartt of Manchester; along with 11 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by a brother: James Smartt; sisters: Viola Smartt Collins, Johnnie Smartt Creek, and Willie Smartt Fiske, as well as a grandson: Nicholas Blake Smartt.

Pallbearers will be David Fiske, Jim Creek, Paul Smartt, Gary David Smartt, Douglas Patton, and Mark Patton.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lighthouse Independent Baptist Church, Men of McCain’s Community, and Mr. Victor Rasbury.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Smartt’s memory to the American Cancer Society for research into Myelodysplastic Syndrome.

You may send condolences to the family at the top of this page.
