Mrs. Maureen Elizabeth Essek, age 59 of McCandless Rd in Columbia, died Monday morning, May 14, 2012 at her residence.
A native of Akron, Ohio, Maureen was the daughter of the late Joseph Fleming and Dorothy Murgatroyd Fleming, a homemaker, and member of the Catholic church. She attended St. Catherine Catholic Church in Columbia. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends in the Hunter Room of Heritage Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon from 2:00 until 6:00 PM, and again one hour prior to funeral services on Friday. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, officiated by Father Davis of St. Catherine Catholic Church. Following the services, the family will continue public visitation until 4:00 PM. Final prayers and interment will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Polk Memorial Gardens.
Maureen is remembered as "the most loving person anyone could know", according to her family. When talking about her, each family member recalls the kindness of her spirit and her caring, giving attitude. If someone needed anything, Maureen would be there willing to give them the shirt off her back. Even following the death of her son, Gabor Jr. in 1996, Maureen continued to share herself with others. Her generosity, passion for others, and loving spirit will me missed by those who knew and loved her. In death, the family encourages those who wish to honor her memory to make memorial donations to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
On August 19, 2012, Maureen would have celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary to her husband and soulmate, Gabor "Gabe" Essek of Columbia. In addition to Gabe, she is survived by two sisters: Ruth (Bob) Ress of Ravenna, OH and Patricia (Bill) Luellen of Chesire, CT; and two brothers: Bennie (Mary) Fleming of Grosse Ile, MI and David Fleming of Barberton, OH.
