Ruth S. Magill passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in Columbia, Tennessee.

A memorial service in celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Olivet United Methodist Church (7600 Columbia Hwy., Pulaski, Tennessee). Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and assisting the family.

A native of Crystal River, Florida, Ruth was born February 5, 1913. She was a graduate of the University of Miami and taught school in Dade County, Florida for many years. During her time in Florida, Ruth was a member of St. Stephen Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove. Ruth loved reading and gardening, and was an inspiration to her family and friends as an active life-long learner. She enthusiastically participated in People-to-People overseas, was a member of the Coral Gables Country Club in Florida, where she loved dancing, and throughout her life, she avidly enjoyed performance and visual arts. As her daughter-in-law notes, she was a “proper” lady, with a special spark and “spit fire!”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy Amanda Ervin Sparkman Osteen and Lacy Simeon Sparkman, husbands John F. Baird and Bradford S. Magill, and sister Gladys S. Max.

Ruth is survived by her sons John (Jack) F. Baird of Hawaii, William (Bill) L. Baird and wife, Ingrid C. Baird, grandson William (Billy) J. Baird,step-grandson Mitchell Booher and step-great-granddaughter, Katelyn Booher, all of Columbia, TN. Ruth is also survived by two sisters, Maxine S. Nicholson of Dunnellon, Fl and Virginia, and Rebecca S. Abernathy of Pulaski, TN. Ruth also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her memory will be cherished by all.
